Identifying problems, engineering solutions.

A lifelong interest in software, a decade of experience from bare-metal to cloud infrastructure, and a passion for automation and DevOps methodologies. End-to-end, from the platform to the product.

01 / About
Ben Dodwell

Infrastructure is my domain. Automation is my passion.

Over the past decade I've run IT infrastructure across healthcare, finance, and education: cloud platforms, networking, identity, endpoints, and the compliance programmes that tie it all together. Right now I'm leading an AWS migration and cloud-native modernisation end-to-end.

I believe good infrastructure is simple, maintainable, and reliable. Terraform, Ansible, and GitHub Actions are how I get there.

Web development is the other side of my work: fast, responsive, and accessible applications, with an eye for detail. Laravel and the TALL stack are usually my tools of choice, but this site is built on Astro (opens in new tab), tuned to load in a blink.

South Yorkshire is home, and I work remotely, but find inspiration in the remoteness of the Scottish Highlands when I'm fortunate enough to visit.

02 / Experience

A career of delivery.

In brief

2025 — present

IT & Cybersecurity Manager

  • Migrated a large VMware estate of 300+ VMs to AWS via a lift-and-shift strategy, maintaining service continuity for customers and internal systems throughout a year-long phased cutover.
  • Leading the re-architecture of the migrated estate to scalable, highly available, AWS managed services, while reducing costs through Savings Plans, storage tiering, and right-sizing, with attribution across the organisation.
2023 — 2025

IT Infrastructure & Cybersecurity Lead

  • Established a GitOps approach to AWS infrastructure using Terraform and GitHub Actions, incorporating Checkov for SAST, improving consistency, scalability, and security across cloud infrastructure.
  • Containerised a legacy on-premises website onto ECS, deploying Authentik for identity management and Traefik as a reverse proxy, enabling fine-grained customer access control that opened a new revenue stream.
  • Deployed Zabbix for infrastructure monitoring across hardware, networks, and applications, with Grafana dashboards for visibility and proactive alerting.
2019 — 2023

IT Infrastructure Engineer

  • Provisioned and managed VMware infrastructure with Terraform, and developed PowerShell automation scripts to support development team delivery pipelines across test and production environments.
  • Developed Ansible roles for configuration management of Windows Server and RHEL servers, enforcing security and operational baselines across the estate.
  • Designed resilient web hosting infrastructure for a mission-critical project using IIS, SQL Server Failover Clustering, and FortiGate for load balancing, SSL/TLS offloading, and WAF.

Litstack

Started as a Frontend Mentor challenge and grew from there. Book search and metadata pull from the Open Library API, with shelf management, progress tracking, reviews, and 2FA auth all built on top. A live demo account lets visitors try it without signing up.
